Can Tho city, with an estimated population of 1,121,000 (2004), is the biggest city in the Mekong Delta. The city is located on the south bank of Hau Giang, the bigger branch of Mekong River. It is approximately 160 kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City, the biggest city of Vietnam.

After 120 years of development, the Can Tho now is the delta’s most important centre of economics, culture, science and technology. It has an airport, a large freshwater port and two industrial parks. With its stable infrastructure, the city is calling for and expecting larger foreign investment.

Can Tho's climate is tropical and monsoonal with two seasons: rainy (May to November) and dry (December to April). Average annual humidity is 83 percent, rainfall 1,635 mm, and temperature 27 °C.

Can Tho Specialties

The Mekong Delta is considered to be the ‘rice basket’ of Vietnam, contributing more than 50% of the nation’s rice production. Can Thocity is famous with tourists for its ‘green tours’ to the rural areas. Guests can enjoy local fruit specialities such as pomelo, longan, jackfruit, mango, mandarin oranges, and durian.

How to get there

Can Tho is 34km from Vinh Long, 62km from Long Xuyen, 63km from Soc Trang, 104 from My Tho, 116km from Rach Gia, 117km from Chau Doc, 169km from Ho Chi Minh City and 179km from Camau.

Road The bus station is about 2km north-west of the centre, along Nguyen Trai St. Regular connections with Ho Chi Minh City’s Mien Tay Bus Station and other centres in the Mekong Delta.
Boat Green line hydrofoil runs between Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho (via My Tho). It takes four hours and is quite comfortable. It costs US$ 24 one way for foreigners and 140,000 VND for Vietnamese. Daily trips leave for Can Tho at 7.30 am and in Can Tho at Ninh Kieu Port at 11.30. The Can Tho departure is at 1.30 pm, arriving in Ho Chi Minh City (Bach Dang Port.) at 5.30 pm.
