Bắc Giang is a mountainous province located in the North of Viet Nam, of which 273.6 thousand hectares are mountainous and 108.6 thousand hectares are midland, surrounded by Lang Son and Thai Nguyen in the north, Hai Duong and Bac Ninh in the south, Hanoi in the west, and Quang Ninh in the east. The main ethnic groups in this area are the Kinh, Tay, Nung, San Chay, San Diu, and Hoa.
Historically, Bac Giang province and the neighbouring Bac Ninh Province were united as Ha Bac province. However, the population growth resulted in Ha Bac being split into two new provinces, each based around one of the old province's two major settlements. The new Bac Ninh province was formed around the municipality of Bac Ninh, while the modern Bac Giang province encompasses Bac Giang municipality and most of the old Ha Bac province's rural districts.
